Breathing apparatus comprises a casing divided into first and second chambers 9, 10 by a diaphragm 8, the first chamber 9 communicating with the medium surrounding the casing and the second chamber 10 communicating with a mouthpiece, valve means 28, 29 controllable by the diaphragm to regulate gas flow from a reservoir through the second chamber to the mouthpiece, first injector means for assisting flow of gas from the valve means to the mouthpiece and second injector means for assisting flow from the reservoir through the valve. The demand valve 28, 29 is opened or closed in response to movements of the diaphragm 8, the valve being operated by a pivotal arm 46 the free end of which extends outside the valve housing 23, 24 and into the chamber 10, a bent lever 43, 44 pivotal in a bushing 42 fixed on the valve housing transmitting movement of the diaphragm to the free end of the arm. One part 43 of the bent lever bears against the diaphragm, the other part 44 pressing against an adjustable screw 49 in the free end of the arm so that the loading of the diaphragm is adjustable. When pressure in the chamber 10 is below that in the chamber 9, the diaphragm operates the lever and arm to move the valve member 28 from its seat 29 into a sleeve 32 against a spring 33. The sleeve is closed at one end and surrounded by passages 35 which are filled with metal wool and connect the reservoir with the valve. When gas flows through the valve, a suction effect on gas within the sleeve urges the valve member further into the sleeve thus creating an injector effect and increasing opening of the valve. Gas flowing through the valve passes into a pipe 40 which extends through the chamber 10 and terminates in a pipe 13 leading to the mouthpiece. Flow of gas from the pipe 40 creates an injector effect on gas in the chamber 10.</p> |
