The magnet assembly (12) produces a magnetic field (18) to combat limescale formation, which penetrates the water passing through the unit (10). The magnets may be installed in a wide range of pipework fittings and valves. Diverse field arrangements are described. The magnets may be permanent- or electromagnets, and the field may be alternating. The assembly is internal or external, and detachable.
