The buried cistern has an overflow drainage pipe with a siphon admitting water to a pipe (6) sloping at a slight angle to the horizontal. The pipe enters the vertical shaft (2) through a hole in the cylindrical sidewall (3), and extends across the shaft. A sieve (8) is suspended under an aperture in the bottom of the pipe. A submerged pump (10) is mounted on the flat bottom of the shaft. It has a control switch (11) operated by a float (12). The output of the pump may be connected to a fountain via a flexible hose.
