Network (10) communication device, for communication on a vehicle network bus, comprises a number of protocol managers (3a-3n) connected to a station microcontroller (1) and to the network. Only one of the protocol managers is adapted to emit data onto the network. The selection of the manager is carried out by hardware or software means. An Independent claim is made for a method for controlling a communication device connected to a vehicle communications network such as a CAN or VAN. According to the method a first command is issued to authorize transmission by a single protocol manager, while a second command is sent to the remaining protocol managers preventing them from transmitting over the network.
