PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a black coating which can be safely and inexpensively formed on the surface of a material to be treated such as a metal without using hexavalent chromium, is uniform and dense, has a rust prevention effect and superior dull appearance, and does not adversely affect the human body and the environment, and to provide a method for forming the black coating. SOLUTION: The black coating is to cover the surface of the material to be treated; and is an oxide film containing an oxide. Thereby, the black coating which is softer than a metallic chromium coating, is uniform and dense, and has the rust prevention effect and the superior dull appearance is safely and inexpensively obtained without using hexavalent chromium.
