PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply and efficiently producing an imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid monoester useful as an agrochemical, a medicine, a material for photographs, their synthetic intermediates, etc. SOLUTION: The method for producing an imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid monoester represented by general formula (1) (R<SB>1</SB>is an alkyl group or an aryl group; R<SB>2</SB>is a hydrogen atom or a substituent group) comprises hydrolyzing a compound represented by general formula (2) (R<SB>3</SB>, R<SB>4</SB>and R<SB>5</SB>are each independently a cyclic group) under a basic condition to give a compound represented by general formula (3) and eliminating a C(R<SB>3</SB>)(R<SB>4</SB>)(R<SB>5</SB>) group from the compound represented by general formula (3).
