The identification plate has a face to carry e.g. coding and has clips (2) to allow plate to be clipped to a hammer. Catches (3) to engage the timber extend from the back of the plate. At least one slot (5) is cut through the plate coincident with the line of the catches so that the catches retain the plate in one piece or a shallower slot elsewhere on the plate.
