A papermaking assembly has a first drum with a semi-flexible mantle that forms one half of a nip gap. The mantle is held in contact with a second drum by a shoe. The flexile mantle outer margins rotate in against fixed rims from which separation is effected by a ring of hydrostatic pockets. The mantle edges (38) engage with and slide through matching fixed grooves (40) on each side where they interface with a ring interface of hydrostatic pockets (50).
