The modular electronic system has modules (60.1,60.2;..) and shift registers (600-603) combined to form each segment (60-63). Several segments are combined into a backplane (100) by cascading the shift registers of the segments. Each segment has plug-in points for modules. The system has a pattern generator that feeds a clock signal and a data signal to the system. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating an inventive system.
