PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a multi-stage transmission for an internal combustion engine to obtain a compact structure, especially with respect to its length, and to provide a transmission capable of carrying a high load, that can be operated with little load or friction during operation in spite of proper thermal expansion and moment action. SOLUTION: All gears disposed in both transmission input shafts 6, 8 and gears 26-38 forming gear pairs, and all synchro units 40-46 disposed in correspondence with these gears are disposed in a transmission output shaft 24. One synchro unit is respectively disposed in two advance gear stages correspondingly. The synchro unit 42 is provided to selectively couple the gear 30 for an even-numbered gear stage and the gear 32 for an uneven-numbered gear stage to the transmission output shaft 24 relatively non-rotatably.
