PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aromatic methylidene compound as a functional material for an electrophotographic photoreceptor, a functional material such as a charge transport material and a luminescent material for an organic electroluminescent element, or a functional material for an organic semiconductor element; and to provide a method for producing the compound, and the organic electroluminescent element using the compound. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by formula (1) (wherein, Ar<SB>1</SB>and Ar<SB>2</SB>are each an unsubstituted or substituted aromatic group, or an unsubstituted or substituted aromatic heterocyclic group; R<SB>1</SB>is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group, or an unsubstituted or substituted alkoxy group; n<SB>1</SB>is an integer of 0, 1 or 2; R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are each hydrogen (with the proviso that a case in which R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are simultaneously hydrogen is excluded), an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group (with the proviso that a case in which R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are simultaneously an alkyl group is excluded), an unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl group (with the proviso that a case in which R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are simultaneously a cycloalkyl group is excluded) or an unsubstituted or substituted aromatic group or an unsubstituted or substituted heterocyclic group (except a pyridyl group); R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>may jointly form a condensed ring of an unsubstituted or substituted aromatic ring, or a condensed unsubstituted or substituted aromatic heterocyclic ring).
