PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of forming a hard film on the surface of a metal or a material containing a metal, which requires cost for forming lower than that required by a conventional method, can form a thick film (e.g., 1 mm or more) and can form the film on a flat face, a curved face and a face with a protrusion and a recess. SOLUTION: A sheet-like or a slurry composite material having a composition consisting of a hard material powder primarily comprising group 4a, 5a and 6a carbide and nitride and a thermally-decomposable organic substance, resin or rubber is stuck on or coated on the surface of a substrate to be coated, and further on the surface thus stuck or coated, a Ni-P alloy containing 0.1-10 atomic% of P is disposed or coated. Then the substrate after above processing are heated to 800-1,300°C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to form the hard film on the surface of the substrate. This method requires low cost, can form a thick film and can form the hard film even on a flat face, a curved face and a face with a protrusion and a recess. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
