A furniture storage unit (20) and method of construction configured to include one or more storage compartments (46, 48) each having dimensions (e. g., height and width) which can be readily varied by a user. Embodiments of the disclosure enable a user to arrange one or more compartments (46, 48) in a wide variety of configurations or patterns within the storage unit (20) to optimize utility and aesthetic appeal. A storage compartment is formed by a suspended web of elongate flexible material (60) having first (62) and second (64) hanger members respectively secured to the web (60) at locations spaced along the web length. The first (62) and second (64) hanger members are configured to be supported by one or more rails (50, 52) at spaced location (68) longitudinally spaced along the rails. The banger members (62, 64) suspend the web (60) so that first and second spaced web portions (72, 78) hang substantially vertically bridged by an intermediate web portion (80) suitable for supporting various objects, e.g., books. |
