A papermaking assembly has a drum (28) with a flexible mantle (32) held in contact with an overhead rigid drum (36) to form a dewatering nip (34). The flexible mantle is pressed upwards by a shoe (30). The flexible mantle outer margins (38) are in dry bearing (56) contact with stationary discs (40). The mantle edges (38) essentially follow the contour profile of the discs (40) as they pass in line with the nip gap.
