PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine capable of improving fuel economy for increase of EGR amount in stoichiometric operation without reducing degree of constant volume. SOLUTION: This engine is provided with an exhaust gas circulating means for introducing exhaust gas in variable amount into a combustion chamber in stoichiometric operation of the engine, an air injection means for injecting pressurized air into the combustion chamber directly, and an injection timing control means for controlling injection timing of pressurized air. The injection timing control means injects pressurized air (S302, S304) by the air injection means when amount of exhaust gas circulation is large among the case where amount of exhaust gas circulation by the exhaust gas circulating means is small and the case where amount of exhaust gas circulation is large.
