摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce load on a starter when an internal combustion engine is started and increase startability without complicating the system of the internal combustion engine by lowering an actual effective compression ratio according to the state of the internal combustion engine at its start by varying the intake valve opening timing of a cylinder in an expansion stroke. SOLUTION: The intake valve opening timing is regulated to controllably lower the actual effective compression ratio of the cylinder tin the compression stroke. Also, the actual effective compression ratio of the cylinder in the compression stroke is determined by the position of a piston at the time of start of the internal combustion engine.
