PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator and a method of installing a new winch without disassembling the existing winch and removing from a machine room, saving much labor of the operator(s). SOLUTION: The elevator reforming method and the elevator include the winch, a shaft, and the machine room in which the winch is installed, wherein movement to the specified place is made using a certain moving means, a sheave part of the existing winch 101 is removed, or the new winch 113 is installed in an empty space in the machine room, and a thin form winch having such a structure that the length in the perpendicular direction to the rotary shaft is greater than the length in the direction of the rotary shaft is used as the new winch 113.
