PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position sensing device for an elevator as an improvement of the conventional technique involving problems wherein the sensing position may be dislocated if its rope and sheave make slippage and a continuous position sensing is not practicable to result in a complicated structure and a high cost. SOLUTION: The position sensing device of the elevator is structured so that a position code display part to show the position of an elevator car is installed over the whole shaft length of the elevator car moving, and a camera to photograph the position code display part is installed in the car, and the code data photographed by the camera is decoded so that the current position of the car is calculated continuously.
