PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a machine for preventing cracks, wrinkles and defective dimensional accuracy in press working. SOLUTION: In the method of pressing a sheet by using tension control, tension applied to a material is measured during press working, and the speed of punch formation is controlled so that the tension falls within a prescribed range. The machine for pressing the sheet by using tension control has a punch 1, die 2, wrinkle suppressor 3, tension measuring means 5 for measuring the tension applied to a material during press working, and controlling means for adjusting the forming speed of the punch or die on the basis of the tension measured by the tension measuring means.
