Disclosed herein are methods of inhibiting infection by at least one microorganism or at least one virus by administering to an animal in an amount effective to inhibit infection a compound having a formula selected from the group consisting of or a salt thereof, such as a hydrochloride salt. At least one of R₁-R₁₃ in formula (I) or at least one of R₁-R₁₂ in formula (II) is -R₁₄Z, where R₁₄ is a substituted or unsubstituted linking group comprising from 1-12 carbon atoms, and Z is a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic group having from 1-12 carbon atoms.
