The panels (4,5) used on a road vehicle body are welded together using a laser (2) that focuses a beam along a line (10) as the panels are moved. The edges of the panels are subjected to a forming process ahead of the welding by a pair of wheels (17,18) that have profiled edges. This creates an angled section (a, alpha) that allows escape of gas generated in welding.
