A papermaking assembly has a drum (28) with a flexible mantle (32) held in contact with an overhead rigid drum (36) to form a dewatering nip (34). The flexible mantle is pressed upwards by a shoe (30). The flexible mantle outer margins (38) slide against stationary side discs (40) with a hydrodynamic bearing interface. The gap (62) is continually charged with a hydraulic fluid and is of varying cross section. The gap width and profile vary in accordance with the local stress loads around the flexible mantle.
