<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method suitable for motor drives that drive an induction motor coupled with the main shaft of a rotating body and is provided with a function of locating and controlling the stop position of the main shaft. <P>SOLUTION: The motor drive 40 comprises: a direct-current power supply 11; an inverter main circuit 12; a current detector 13; an acceleration/deceleration computation circuit 22; a V/f control circuit 23; a PWM control circuit 24; a position detection circuit 25; a vector control circuit 31; a speed detection circuit 32; a change-over switch 41; a control switching determination circuit 42; a speed computation circuit 43 for position control; a change-over switch 44; a switch 45; and a change-over switch 46. In normal operation during which a speed command value is outputted from a higher-level controller 50, the induction motor 1 is subjected to V/f control.
