PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophoretic display medium and an electrophoretic display device combining a high reflectance with a high contrast and high reliability. SOLUTION: In the electrophoretic display medium obtained by dispersing one or more sorts of electrophoretic particles in an electric insulating carrier liquid, the electric insulating carrier liquid contains a compound represented by the formula (1) wherein X and Y each independently represent a carboxyl group, a hydroxyl group, a sulfonic group, a betaine acid group, a 1-3C alkyl group, a pyridine salt group, an amino group or a hydrogen atom; R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>6</SP>each independently represent a 1-3C alkyl group or a hydrogen atom; and n represents 5-80; with the proviso that at least one of X and Y is a group selected from the group consisting of a carboxyl group, a hydroxyl group, a sulfonic group, a pyridine salt group, an amino group, and a betaine acid group.
