PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a variable resistor which enables miniaturization and reduction in height, and is provided with an insulating film member without a hindrance at the bottom on the back of a collector terminal. SOLUTION: A chip-type variable resistor comprises an insulating substrate 1 provided with a resistor on its surface, external terminals 11, 12 provided in the insulating substrate 1 in a state of being electrically connected respectively to both ends of the resistor, a collector terminal 15 having a cylindrical axial part 17 inserted into a through hole 2 of the insulating substrate 1, and a slider 20 which comes into contact with the collector terminal 15 while sliding on the resistor. A notch 16a and a hole 16b are provided at the bottom 16 on the back of the collector terminal 15, and an insulating film member 25 is provided so as to cover the cylindrical axial part 17, the notch 16a and the hole 16b in the bottom 16.
