PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cycloolefin copolymer in which a structural unit (a) derived from a specific cycloolefin compound having a methoxysilyl group and a structural unit (b) derived from another cycloolefin compound are randomly arranged in a uniform composition distribution, wherein the copolymer has good optical transparency and heat resistance and a small coefficient of linear expansion and is used as a suitable material for a sheet or film for an optical material, and to provide a crosslinked cycloolefin copolymer obtained by crosslinking the copolymer and methods for producing these copolymers. SOLUTION: The cycloolefin addition copolymer comprises 70-98 mol% of a structural unit (a) derived from bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene and 2-20 mol% of a structural unit (b) derived from a specific cycloolefin compound having a methoxysilyl group, wherein the copolymer has a number average molecular weight of 30,000-300,000 and is soluble in toluene and cyclohexane at 25°C.
