PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical type casting apparatus which can reduce its cost and has a simple structure, and hardly causes troubles during operation, and can cast a casting which has no shrinkage cavity by effectively pressing the molten metal existing in a closed cavity, and further to provide a casting method using the same. SOLUTION: The vertical type casting apparatus comprises a lower side fixed die 1 and an upper side movable die 2 which can form a die cavity, a pouring stalk 5 provided so as to communicate with a molten metal pouring gate 10 formed in the fixed die 1 so as to communicate with the die cavity, a casting means for supplying and filling the molten metal existing in a molten metal reserving furnace 6 to the die cavity through the pouring stalk 5 from below, and a plunger 14 which can close the molten metal pouring gate 10 from above. The plunger 14 has a projecting portion 13 at the tip end portion thereof. The vertical type casting apparatus is configured such that the molten metal pouring gate 10 is closed by inserting the projecting portion 13 of the plunger 14 into the molten metal pouring gate 10, and in addition, the circumferential portion of the projecting portion 13 of the plunger 14 pressurizes the molten metal charged in the die cavity.
