1,012,258. Heating and pressing grain &c. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. March 17, 1964 [March 18, 1963], No. 11300/64. Heading A2Q. In heating and pressing particulate material, the material is passed through the nip between the conical surfaces of two rotating, conical plates 5 and 6. In pressing wheat or barley seeds and simultaneously cooking the resulting flakes, the seeds are soaked in water and fed through the nip between the conical plates, one or both of which are heated, to temperatures between 200 and 300‹C., by gas burners 46 and/or 47. The cooked flakes are scraped from the plates by flexible knives 48 and 49. The conical plates 5 and 6 may be rigidly secured to the ends of rotating shafts 7 and 8 subtending an angle to each other equal to half the sum of the two apex angles of the plates. These apex angles may be equal and each may be 170 degrees. One or both of the shafts 7 and 8 may be urged towards the other by an adjustable force provided by a spring or a stack of spring washers. In an alternative construction, the conical plates are non- rigidly mounted on the shafts and adjustable rollers press on the backs of the plates. |
