A loop reactor comprises a cyclic reactor tube and an axial pump for conveying polymerization mixture. The reactor tube has a diameter that varies by at least 10% based on predominant reactor tube diameter and has at least one widening (7) and narrowing (8) in a region other than that of the axial pump. An independent claim is included for polymerizing olefinic monomer in the loop reactor at 20 - 150[deg]C but below the melting point of the polymer and at a pressure of 5 - 100 bar.
