This invention relates to a method of / an operating system (30) for storing data (32) to a file (10). Said method includes the steps of: allocating a first number of contiguous clusters, wherein said first number of contiguous clusters is dependent on characteristics of a writing data process to a data storage medium (14); and writing (200) data contiguously into said first number of contiguous clusters until the file is completely written. Said method further comprises the step of: freeing a second number (12B) of clusters as an unused amount of said first number of clusters when said file is completely written and closed for writing. Said data storage medium is a disk, a hard disk, a solid state storage or an optical disc. Said characteristics is at least one of maximum bit-rate, current bit rate, current file length, final file length and length of file not saved yet. This enables for that the file stored and that the unused areas on the data storage medium, each will be left with minimum fragmentation.
