The invention relates to a lighting device which is suitable for an external rear view mirror of a motor vehicle. The inventive device is installed inside the rear view mirror housing (1) using a frame (19) which is solidly connected to said housing. The device comprises at least one light source (2) which illuminates at least one side area close to the motor vehicle. The aforementioned frame (19) comprises mobile coupling means which enable the device to adopt at least two positions in relation to the housing (1), namely: at least one first working position in which the cover (4) is essentially flush with the lower part of the rear view mirror housing (1), the light source (2) illuminating an area immediately below the rear view mirror; and a second position in which the light source (2) can be replaced. The above-mentioned mobile coupling means also enable the device to adopt a third working position.
