<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extract objects such as defects in a product from an image and classify their types. <P>SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus for detecting areas of objects from an image comprises a contour extraction processing part for extracting closed curves delimiting contours of objects, a contour direction estimation processing part for estimating directions of the closed curves from pixel values about the closed curves, and an object classification processing part for classifying the objects by the directions of the closed curves and inclusion relations of the parts enclosed by the closed curves.
