<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aromatic polycarbonate containing a small amount of foreign matters and excellent in hue while retaining molding properties. <P>SOLUTION: The aromatic polycarbonate is obtained by the transesterification method and has a viscosity-average molecular weight of at least 16,000, and has a ratio (Mw/Mn) of the weight-average molecular weight (Mw) to the number-average molecular weight (Mn) as measured by the gel permeation chromatography, each in terms of polystyrene, of at least 2.8 and at most 4.5 and the number of fisheyes in the aromatic polycarbonate is not more than 1,500.
