<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optionally multiply a frequency of signal light without converting it into an electric signal, without using the frequency but with only one multiplier and with an unconverted optical signal. <P>SOLUTION: The variable optical multiplier is equipped with a light interference part to branch a signal light beam and a continuous light beam respectively into two beams, to delay only one branched signal light beam, furthermore, to distribute one branched continuous light beam to a phase variation part to which the delayed branched signal light beam is inputted, to distribute the other branched continuous light beam to a phase variation part to which the undelayed branched signal light beam is inputted, and at the same time, to multiplex two light beams passed through the phase variation parts and to output the multiplexed light beam, a power adjusting part installed corresponding to both of, or either of, the signal light beam and the continuous light beam so as to adjust power of the corresponding light beam, and a control part to change two phase differences of the phase variation parts into nπand a discrete point by controlling the power adjusting part.
