PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately form an image on paper by conveying a toner image to a secondary transfer position via an area on which sufficient tensile force acts in the moving path of the endless belt so that the toner image is not deformed in the moving direction of an endless belt. SOLUTION: A secondary transfer roller 14 is allowed to abut on a driving roller 11a to which driving force from a motor 11c is supplied out of a plurality of rollers on which the intermediate transfer belt 11 is laid, whereby the roller 11a is used as a backup roller at the secondary transfer position Pt2. A primary transfer position Pt1 is formed on the downstream side of the contact position of the belt 11 with the roller 11a in the moving path of the belt 11. The toner image transferred to the belt 11 at the primary transfer position Pt1 is conveyed to the secondary transfer position Pt2 via the area on which large tensile force acts on the belt 11.
