The invention relates to a method for operating a synchronous machine which comprises a permanently excited rotor and a stator provided with a phase coil consisting in determining the rotor position. According to said invention, for rectifying a possible winding error, at least one current and/or voltage vector having a defined duration is applied to the phase winding of the unloaded synchronous machine in the direction of the determined position of the rotor. Such a measure constrains the orientation of the rotor of the synchronous machine in the corresponding angular position and ensures that the rotor is situated in a predetermined angular position.
