摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that when an alignment control film is irradiated with polarized light, polarized light reflected by a tapered portion of an electrode again is made to irradiate the surface of the alignment control film, thereby causing alignment failure. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display has a pair of substrates at least one of which is transparent; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the pair of substrates; an electrode group formed on one substrate of the pair of substrates to apply an electric field on the liquid crystal layer; a plurality of active elements connected to the electrode group; an alignment control film formed on the surface of the pair of substrates in contact with the liquid crystal layer; and an optical means formed on at least one substrate of the pair of substrates and varying the optical characteristics depending on the molecular alignment state of the liquid crystal layer. The taper angle at the end of the electrode group is controlled to be larger than 45°and smaller than 90°. The thickness (x) of the electrode group, the taper angleθat the end, and the film thickness (y) of the alignment control film satisfy the relation of y>x/2sin<SP>2</SP>θ. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p>
