PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of reducing the influence of heat fluctuation and obtaining excellent in short wavelength output and C/N when being reproducved by a MR head. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium provided with a non-magnetic layer in which non-magnetic powder is scattered in binder is provided on a support and a magnetic layer in which ferromagnetic powder is scattered in binder is provided on the non-magnetic layer, the medium has a magnetic layer including the hexagonal system ferrite magnetic powder of which the average plate diameter is 10-35 nm and the coercive force Hc is 135-400 kA/m, also, in a magnetic layer including magnetic powder, of which the coercive force is 135-440 kA/m and the product of average particles volume (V(TEM)) of an anisotropic magnetic field (Hk) and the magnetic powder is 1.2×10<SP>6</SP>to 2.4×10<SP>6</SP>kA/(m×nm<SP>3</SP>).
