PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately establish/control EGR rates and compression ratios. SOLUTION: A variable compression ratio mechanism variably controlling compression ratios of an engine and an exhaust gas recirculation device variably controlling EGR rates are provided. Reference target values of EGR rates and compression ratio are calculated mainly based on engine loads (S1, S2). When an acceleration demand exists, a target value is established by correcting the reference target values of EGR rates and compression ratios based on magnitude of the acceleration demand (S3, S5-7).
