The airbag module (4) is incorporated in the roof area (2) of the automobile (1), above the head of a passenger and has an airbag cassette (5) with an integrated airbag (6) and a sensor-controlled gas generator. The airbag is deployed downwards in the direction of the steering wheel (8), or rearwards along the underside of the automobile roof (3), in dependence on the response of an acceleration sensor or inclination sensor.
