PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system capable of easily recovering a faulty state to a state wherein normal authentication can easily and quickly be carried out even when the replacement of a component for storing a certificate required for the authentication is required while maintaining the security. SOLUTION: A lower level apparatus 20 provided with a communication I/F and managed by a higher level apparatus 10 communicable with the apparatus 20 via the communication I/F provides a regular public key certificate issued by a public certificate authority to be authenticated by a communication party for carrying out communication, and executes the communication when the apparatus 20 is authenticated by the communication party with the regular public key certificate, and is provided with a component A being a replaceable component in a minimum unit, the component A having storage areas for storing the regular public key certificate and a rescue public key certificate issued by a private certificate authority. Through the configuration above, the regular certificate set can securely be stored to the lower level apparatus 20 provided with the regular component A, while it is possible not to transmit the regular certificate set to a lower level apparatus mounted with a false component A'.
