PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable adjustment of the quantity itself of the light to be irradiated on an original from a light source by a simple operation in prevention of decrease in output level of a photoelectric conversion element due to change with time and the like. SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus is provided with a light source (35) for irradiating the original surface with a light, and a photoelectric conversion means (32) for receiving a reflected light from the original and converting the received light into an electrical signal. The apparatus is provided with a light quantity adjusting means (70) for adjusting the light quantity to be irradiated to the original, passing through an optical path on the optical path between the light source (35) and an original read position for irradiating the light of the light source on the surface of the original.
