PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader provided with a read means having a light source that saves energy by effectively utilizing the light source of the read means. SOLUTION: The image reader comprises: a transmission member 21 located at the side of contact glass 29 on the upper face of a reading and placing platen 6 and at the side of a platen cover 7; moving means 61, 62 capable of moving a reading unit 31 being a reading means between a notice position at which the scanner lamp 35 of the light source faces the transmission member 21 and a home position under a platen glass 9; and a shield member 23 for preventing external light intruded from the transmission member 21 from reaching the reading unit 31 whose position is fixed under the contact glass 29 or the reading unit 31 located under the platen glass 9.
