PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately perform defect control even when spare area on an information recording medium is expanded or reduced, in a write once type recording medium being recordable only once. SOLUTION: An optical disk represented by a BD-R or the like is used as an information recording medium. The optical disk has recording structure which is constituted of a read-in area, a read-out area, and a user data area. Also, this optical disk corresponds to a defect management system, and a spare area and a defect control area are provided between the user data area and the read-out area. When such a situation that recording capacity of this spare area becomes insufficient occurs, size of the spare area is expanded. At this time, size of the defect management area is also expanded simultaneously.
