PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically set a scale axis of a most proper upper limit value and a lower limit value in a range of variation in data to be plotted on a graph. SOLUTION: From data input in a control means of a data display device, a maximum value and a minimum value are obtained, and they are rounded off to gain an integer M and an integer m. Then, the digits with a larger number of digits in comparison of the integer M and the integer m is made to be n, and a calculation result of 10<SP>(n-1)</SP>is made to be N. The value obtained by rolling forward the integer M at Nth digit is made an upper limit value H, and a value obtained by cutting off the integer m at Nth digit is made a lower limit value L. The most proper plot range for the data to be plotted on a graph is set and so graph plot whose variation is easily seen can always be ensured on the graph without exceeding the plot range.
