PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pinion shaft at low cost which materializes long life of a planetary gear device by preventing deterioration of life due to increase in temperature and rotation speed. SOLUTION: A pinion shaft 6 for freely rotatably supporting a pinion 5 of a planetary gear device through the medium of a needle roller is subjected to high-temperature tempering after high-frequency hardening, wherein a whole residual austenite amount is set at 3.0 vol% or less and surface hardness at 740 Hv or higher.
