The road vehicle steering system (10) has two racks (14) which may be connected respectively to the left and right front wheels. They have narrow portions which overlap and lie side-by-side with a sliding strip between them. The teeth (15) on each portion of the racks are of different pitches, being widely-spaced near the tip and closely spaced at the root ends. A pressure member (18) with a V- shaped groove is mounted in the housing (12) and push the racks against a toothed pinion (16) on the steering column.
