An aqueous solution of an olefinic compound which has an olefinic bond in the alpha,beta position to a carbonyl group or to a nitrile group, which contains as solubilizing agent for the said compound, a water-soluble quaternary ammonium alkylsulphate is subjected to hydrodimerization by electrolytic procedures, e.g. those described in Specification 967,956. In an example a catholyte was prepared by dissolving acrylonitrile in an aqueous methyltributylammonium methosulphate solution and employed in a cell using aqueous methyltriethylammonium p-toluenesulphonate solution as anolyte. The initial pH of the catholyte was adjusted to neutrality by addition of aqueous benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide solution and acetic acid added during electrolysis to ensure that only slight alkalinity developed. The electrolysis was conducted at 3 amperes for about 3 hours at cathodic voltages of -1.87 to 1.89.ALSO:An aqueous solution of an olefinic compound which has an olefinic bond in the alpha, beta position to a carbonyl group or to a nitrile group contains as solubilizing agent for the said compound a water-soluble quaternary ammonium alkylsulphate. The quaternary ammonium cation may have aliphatic and/or aromatic organic radicals attached to the nitrogen atom and/or the nitrogen atom may form part of a heterocyclic ring.
