<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-standing thin film which contains, as a main component, natural clay or synthetic clay including uniformly oriented clay particles, in which a polyhydric phenol is uniformly dispersed in a clay thin film, and which is excellent in flexibility; and to provide a method for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the composite clay film, which has mechanical strength capable of being used as a self-standing film and in which the polyhydric phenol is uniformly distributed in the clay thin film wherein clay particle laminates are highly oriented, comprises preparing a uniform clay dispersion by dispersing the polyhydric phenol and clay in liquid being a dispersion medium comprising water or mainly comprising water, then precipitating clay particles by leaving the dispersion at rest, at the same time, forming the clay particles into a film form by separating the liquid being the dispersion medium with a solid-liquid separation means, so as to produce the composite clay film, and further arbitrarily drying the composite clay film under a temperature condition of 110-300°C, so as to obtain a self-standing film.
