PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inspection method for determining the initial mechanical damage to an object. SOLUTION: A test frequency f<SB>0</SB>is selected in a block 102 along with a specific scan (e.g., a surface wave or back scattering). In a block 104, a proper converter is selected so as to detect both of a fundamental test frequency f<SB>0</SB>and the secondary higher harmonic 2f<SB>0</SB>of a fundamental frequency. When the block 104 advances to a block 106, the parameter of the scan itself is designed. The layout area and volume of the object, the geometry of a beam, a line increment and an increment between pulses are contained. The ultrasonic image of the obtained object is collected as shown by a block 108 regardless of a scan type to be performed by a method for capturing amplitude data in both of f<SB>0</SB>and 2f<SB>0</SB>. Finally, the processed amplitude data is used as shown by a block 112 to discriminate a region highest in 2f<SB>0</SB>-f<SB>0</SB>amplitude ratio in order to evaluate the residual life of the object.
